Scenario
Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer calls in Sam to protect her Rat Scabies, a member of classic punk band The Damned.
There’s a lot to like about Black Doves, once you get over the fact that it’s pretty far-fetched!
Keira Knightly plays the wife of the UK’s Minister of Defence, but who’s actually a trained assassin working for a shadowy organisation (yeah, yeah, I never would have made it past the vetting, I know!). The plot introduces some of her colleagues, who include a variety of mixed characters, but are actually pretty funny, with a nod to Guy Ritchie.
The plot involves a gang war, the CIA, and an international incident that threatened a major feud between China, the UK, and the US
There is an underlying element of homosexuality in fellow actor Ben Wishaw, who plays a homosexual who was groomed to be an assassin by his father, who was also one. This gave Wishaw the chance to play a tortured and nuanced role quite sympathetically, but it reminds me why my wife and I enjoy Korean and Japanese dramas, where graphic sex is not depicted.
Girl, quite believable in her role
The plot moves along at a good pace, and there are some wonderful caricatures in the mix of Black Dove assassins. Overall, despite being quite far-fetched, it is an enjoyable watch, and Knightly does a believable job of being a rather fearsome character.
It is certainly worth a watch!
