MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a darkly comedic drama that follows the journey of Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Afghan Army veteran. She finds herself at odds with her family over the arrival of her best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales), who died in the military. Despite the persistence of her VA team counselor (Morgan Freeman), the strong love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the indifference of an unexpected boyfriend, Merritt’s cozy-dysfunctional friendship with Zoe isolates the two from the world. That is until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s ancestral lake house, begins to lose his way and the one thing he refuses to do… need help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways we process grief.
