MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merita (Sonequa Martin-Green), a US Army veteran in Afghanistan who is at odds with her family because of her dead best friend Zoe (Natalie Morales). from the military. Despite the persistence of her VA consultant (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the ease of her unexpected love interest, Merritt’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. That is until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) at the family’s heirloom lake house begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses…help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about complicated friendships, broken families, and the complicated ways we deal with grief.
