MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran from Afghanistan, who is at odds with her family over Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the military. Despite the persistence of her VA group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the love of her difficult mother (Gloria Reuben), and an unexpected surge of love, Merit’s cozy, dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the two isolated from the world. That is, until Merritt’s grandfather (Ed Harris), who lived in the family’s ancestral lake house, starts to go awry and needs the one thing he refuses to give up… help. It’s essentially a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a fractured family, and the complex ways we process grief.
