The opening shot was promising, a pan through a US city, the soundtrack blaring – could this be a remake of the kick-boxer and Blood-Sport movies of the 1980s?
Scenario
One last kumite, one final battle… for his daughter’s life… David Yeung is the son of Bolo Yeung, who played antagonist Chong Li in Bloodsport (1988), which was the main inspiration for The Last Kumite (2024).
Unfortunately not, I barely made it past the opening tournament
It looked like it was filmed in my elementary school’s gym hall, I just couldn’t take it seriously after that.
Lots of exaggerated stares between the actors, it almost feels like a parody
The rows of bright oblong lights on the ceiling, the crowd sitting around the edge… I don’t know, it just looked wrong!
The wimpy-looking, balding lead actor looks to be in his late 50s – sorry, but he’s no Van Damme!
I guess this just goes to show that it’s not that easy to make martial arts movies, even if the guys who made this are fanatics.
